Greetings to all you Older & Wiser Women and a warm welcome to those who have just joined us. This is such a magnificant time of our lives. I look forward to hearing from each of you.
When we first launched OlderWiserWomen, there was a bit of a problem with the link you received to download "50 Tips for Vibrant Living". Though we have fixed it several times, I still occasionally hear from someone who is having problems. If you have NOT been able to download your gift, please let me know.
In this issue, OlderWiserWomen takes a look at menopause, issues a warning about phishing, shares thoughts from the Universe and asks you to complete a survey about future directions.
This month in the US, we celebrate Black History Month, Heart Health Month, Chinese New Year and of course, Valentines Day. Last but not least, Happy Birthday to Mom! Enjoy all your celebrations.
To Your Successful Aging,
Barbara

It's Heart Health month! Did you know that the number one cause of death in women over 50 is heart disease? Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself.
- Exercise 30 minutes daily. Exercise does everything good for you. You will feel better, have more energy, burn some calories, give your heart the activity she craves, improve your mood, stablize your blood sugar and prevent or improve osteoporosis. It is truly that magic bullet that everyone searches for!
- If you are overweight, then it's time to get that under control. Smaller portions, fewer calories, more vegetables, fish, and of course exercise. You must burn off more than you take in.
- If you have diabetes...keep those sugars under control. (More on this in an upcoming issue).
- Do you know your fasting lipds (cholesterol and triglycerides)? Have the test done! Your ideal numbers will depend on your risk factors, but in general you want your HDL (hapy cholesterol) to be high - greater than 50, your LDL (lousy cholesterol) to be less than 70-100, your total cholesterol less than 170, and your triglycerides less than 150.
- If you smoke - STOP. I cannot emphasize this enough.
Because exercise is so very important to your health and well being, we've added some specific videos and dvd's to our bookstore to help get you started. Take a look, order one that appeals to you, and get started moving today. It will make your heart a happy one.

| WiserMind ~ Thoughts |
 |
|
Every once in awhile, I run across something online that is truly a delight. Such is the case with thoughts that come to me 5 days per week from the Universe. I've included one that I received the other day. I felt as if it was speaking directly to me.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
What if every wrinkle, scar, or gray hair only made you more beautiful? What if every tear you've shed, mistake you've made, and challenge you've faced, only drew you nearer the light? And what if, Barbara, for every breath you've taken, every sentence you've spoken, and every path you've chosen, your fans in the unseen multiplied.
Well, I'd say it's about time you found out.
Be proud, we are -
The Universe

Have you been lucky enough lately to get emails from places like eBay, PayPal, your ISP (such as Earthlink), your bank or credit card company (or perhaps one you've never heard of)? Are they asking you to sign in because there has been unauthroized use of your account? Well, I've had several just this week, and they are all fake! This is called "phishing" and it's an attempt that some not-so-nice-folks are making at getting to your money!
First of all, don't open those emails or click on any links. If you are unsure, open up your browser and go check out the home page of your bank (credit card, PayPal account, etc). There will most likely be something on the home page telling you what to do if you get these emails.
I've included a few links here where you can find more information about this nasty scam that is very popular these days. Knowledge is power...please protect yourself and your bank account.

Just What is Menopause?
Simply stated, menopause is a biological event that marks the end of a woman's menses and hence her natural reproductive cycle. Perimenopause is defined as the period beginning with the signs of approaching menopause and ends about 12 months after "the menopause".
Worldwide, menopause, has a variety of meanings. Each and every woman's experience is based on her physical and emotional well being as well as her social and cultural environments. While some view menopause as a decline in status, others see it as a rite of passage. In other words, there are huge physical, emotional and social influences involved in your experience of menopause and aging.
That said, what you really want to know is - "What will I experience"?
